Hello there,

I have an ActiveSMS server that receives SMS (at night) via a GSM modem and forwards them as email via an ADSL Internet connection. However, the Internet connection went down last night and no email seems to have been sent, although the incoming SMS log has many entries and the message queues on the "status" tab show zero.

So here are my questions :

1- How does ActiveSMS behave when it receives an SMS but the Internet connection is down ?

2- Is there a way to check that the emails have been successfully sent/received ? I think there's an "email delivery report" option somewhere, but as far as I remember, it did not work for us...

Dear Aurélien,

On failure, ActiveSMS will attempt to send each message 5 times. If message fails on the last attempt it will send an error report back via SMS.

Was a failure has been detected, it will test the SMTP connection to make sure the server is still available. If the SMTP server connection fails it goes into a mode where it will wait for connection to be restored.

In summary, you may loose the first message after the internet connection when down, after that, all subsequent message should be queue until internet connection was restored.

To work around this issue you can use the Microsoft Virtual SMTP Server as an email relay. Configure ActiveSMS with the SMTP 'localhost' and enable relaying on the Microsoft Virtual SMTP Server.

Hello there,

Sorry for my belated answer, but I wanted to tell everyone interested that the solution suggested above works fine ! :-D

We gave a try with Microsoft's Virtual SMTP server, then moved on to using MailEnable (www.mailenable.com) Standard free-as-in-beer SMTP server. Be warned though, that the MMC administration tool may be VERY slow to display in case of mailboxes containing many e-mails (counting +/- 100 000 emails could take up to 15 minutes...). Although this might not be a flaw but rather a misconfiguration.
