Hello there,

We're using ActiveSMS in the SMS-to-email role with a Siemens MC75 GSM modem (standalone deported antenna, and connected to the PC via USB cable) with a single SIM card.

The modem is supposed to receive up to 2000 SMS every night/morning (between 2 and 9 o'clock), and it did fine until week 11 2009, when we started to "lose" = (not receive) up to 60% SMS.

Both SMS logging and queueing are on a database, not text file/memory, and incoming SMS log shows way fewer SMS received than expected.

My issue is the following :
Although the problem seems to be uphill (SMS not received can't be processed), how can I make sure that ActiveSMS has NOTHING to do with this huge SMS loss ?

Does ActiveSMS log EVERY SMS it receives ?

Is there a way to check if every received SMS is well converted into e-mail and sent ?

What could prevent ActiveSMS from receiving and/or processing SMS ?

And at the end of the day, how can I assure my boss and colleagues that "ActiveSMS has been found unguilty of the SMS loss crime" ? :-)

To enable us to resolve this issue could you please turn-on trace logging.

To turn-on trace logging you need to do the following:-
1. Open the ActiveSMS Console
2. Goto the Transport page
3. Click Configure button for the active Transport
4. Select the 'Log Activity To File' option
5. Enter a valid Log Filename, e.g. C:\GSMModemLog.txt

Run a short test to re-create the problem. Once the test complete, please email the GSMModemLog.txt to mailto:support@intellisoftware.co.uk

Please let me know how many message you were expecting during the test.

Please send me your licence key so that I can check if you have a valid support contract in-place.

Hello, and thank you for your quick reply.

After changing the SIM card (whose lifespan is supposed to be about 500 000 read/write cycles), having the phoneline reactivated by our phone provider, and cabled the modem with RS232 instead of USB cable, we received the estimated 700 SMS last night, so nothing wrong here.

I had switched modem activity log on for the night and ended with a 11MB file for 14.5 hours of activity.

Considering everything went fine, I'll wait for a few days and observe the behavior.

(Another hypothesis is that being located close to Strasbourg in France, the phone relays/networks might be disturbed by the electronic warfare countermeasures set up for the coming NATO summit in 10 days, on the 3rd + 4th of April 2009...)
